LA Angels’ Shohei Ohtani ended up on the injured list, ending his season early. He is expected to schedule elbow surgery in the future, and his destination in the free agent market after the season is the biggest concern.
On the 17th (Korean time), the Angels officially announced, “Shohei Ohtani has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to pain in his right side. He will miss the remainder of this season.” The Angels, who are 68-80, have 14 games remaining.
It has been four years since Ohtani was placed on the injured list in March 2019 after undergoing Tommy John surgery after the 2018 season. Ohtani was revealed on August 24 to have damaged the medial collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Since then, he has no longer appeared as a pitcher, but has continued to appear as a batter. However, he suffered an injury to his right side while practicing batting before the game against Baltimore on the 5th. This caused him to miss 11 consecutive games before Detroit on the 16th.
Otani’s early end to the season was expected on the 16th. After the game, all personal objects, including bats and spikes, were removed from Otani’s locker in the Angels clubhouse. Colleagues were embarrassed to see Otani’s empty locker. On the 17th, the Angels officially announced the early end of the season by announcing Ohtani’s inclusion on the injured list.
This season, which marks his 6th year in the Major League, Otani participated in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) last March with the Japanese national team and won the championship. He clinched the championship by striking out Angels teammate Mike Trout in the 9th inning of the final against the United States.
After the opening, he did a great job as a pitcher. As a pitcher, he appeared in 23 games, pitched 132 innings, and recorded 10 wins, 5 losses, an ERA of 3.14, 167 strikeouts, a WHIP of 1.06, and a hitting percentage of .184. He posted double-digit multipliers for the second straight year. He fell 30 innings short of regulation innings for the second straight year.
As a batter, he was on pace to be the home run king before getting injured. He appeared in 135 games, where he had 151 hits in 497 at-bats, a batting average of . He hit .300 for the first time.
His second American League MVP award is certain. He is also likely to become the American League home run king. He is 9 ahead of 2nd place Luis Robert (Chicago White Sox, 35).
Ohtani becomes a free agent after the season. The Angels have already lost the district title, and they only need two more losses to advance to the playoffs and are guaranteed to be eliminated. Ohtani, who wore the Angels uniform in 2018, had never advanced to the postseason for six years until this year.
