It poses a serious threat to the Southeast Asian gambling market. Sentinel One, a famous U.S. cybersecurity company, reported that a variety of malware and hacking operations performed by Chinese hackers are targeting the Asian region.
SentinelOne’s report:

Senior threat analysts from U.S.-based Tom Hegel and Aleksandr Milenkowski conducted a detailed study and released it to the world. The company they work for is one of the best open spots for various threats around the world, as it is a reliable source of information that quickly became famous for its findings.

The company released a report on the news. “Company Sentinel Labs identified Chinese malware and infrastructure potentially implicated in China-related operations targeting the gambling sector in Southeast Asia.”

The report also sheds light on the background of this operation. Following a major crackdown on Chinese gambling operations in Macau, Southeast Asia has become a major focus in the expansion of China’s gambling operations in the continent. The region has become fertile ground for gathering data related to various surveillance and response operations occurring in the Chinese market.

Sentinel One even holds the initiative of a group of hackers that may be behind it all. According to sources, tactics, techniques, and procedures captured during the operation point to Bronze Starlight, a group of high-profile hackers already known in the industry for their ransomware, which was posted as cover hiding the various spy motivations that were the first motive behind the attack.

Hegel and Milenkoski provided a detailed analysis. The team said, “This is a group of suspected Chinese ‘ransomware’ that appears to be primarily aimed at spying rather than the financial benefits of using ransomware as a means of distracting or misattributing it.”

Run a huge task:

However, all of this seems to be part of a larger operation called Operation ChattyGoblin. The operation involved various attacks conducted by Chinese-Nexus actors, with the main targets being gambling companies based in Southeast Asia. They were hacked with the Comm100 and LiveHelp100 chat apps that became Trojan horses.

The attack compromised the assets of many critical companies, including Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Edge, and the Guardian McAfee VirusScan executable that is prone to DLL hijacking.

Another suspicion:

This is not the first time that giant companies specializing in global threat analysis have shown interest in the Asian market. Insight Group, the department of researches on recorded future threats, has recently faced several suspicions. Insight Group has considerable experience in the global threat analysis industry, and Insight Group’s main focus is on cyberattacks from Chinese and North Korean hackers. They have already hinted that Red Hotel, one of the supposedly Chinese-run cyber espionage organizations, is targeting various online gambling businesses in Southeast Asian countries.
