Kangwon Land, the operator of the casino resort, has appointed Vice President Choi Chul-kyu as its interim CEO.
The company said the vice president will carry out new tasks “until a new CEO takes office,” according to a filing with the Korea Exchange on Tuesday.
The appointment followed the resignation of the company’s former CEO, Isamgal, on Friday. He was appointed to a three-year term until April 2024.
The new CEO was described on paper as a former aide to the South Korean presidential office. He also previously served as a policy advisor to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.
Kangwon Land, the only resort in the country where the casinos are open to locals, is located on a remote upland, a three-hour drive east of Seoul. Part of its function is to support the community, a former mining community, economically.
South Korean news media reported that politicians, community representatives, and some members of the company have been calling for Lee’s resignation.
In June, the government’s annual “Public Institution Performance Assessment” gave the company a “D” rating – the lowest rating ever for Kangwon Land, Inc. The cited factors included a lack of “customer-attracting content” at the resort, inefficiency in labor costs, workplace sexual harassment and harassment, and corruption related to staffing.
