Numerous casino regulators and authorities in Macau have raised awareness of illegal phone device use on casino premises. They remind the casino to step up its measures for access to all mobile devices while players gamble at the game table.
The warning about mobile phone use comes after authorities recently discovered an online proxy betting ring performed using the WeChat messenger application. As many as 17 people have been arrested for their involvement in illegal online betting fraud at one of the larger casinos. Earlier this year, law enforcement officers were warned by the public that illegal activities had been found at one of Macau’s casinos. This led to the seizure of a residential complex in Nambang-gu and the arrest of seven men suspected of being behind a gambling organization.
The criminals arrested on Thursday were caught live-streaming the entire game from a different perspective, giving chat participants the opportunity to give instructions to each player and tell them the size of the bet they want to make. Thirteen of the criminals were mainland Chinese residents and the other four were men from Macau.
Macau’s Game Inspection and Coordination Agency (DICJ) has already issued a statement, a reminder that governments and officials should do some of the work and ban all mobile phones, regardless of whether they have Internet connections. All Macau casino operators and junkets should strengthen measures against illegal activities involving mobile phones and improve monitoring policies. All casino halls, including VIP rooms, must always be subject to strict video surveillance, so that all illegal activities do not occur in the first place.
