Macau’s Bureau of Statistics and Census said on Monday that the number of visitors to Macau rose 11% year-on-year to 2.65 million in October.
During the month, people from mainland China increased by 20.5% year-on-year.
The gains don’t appear to have been reflected in popular market casino play. According to unofficial industry returns cited by investment analysts, popular market gross game sales (GGR) fell about 8% year-over-year in October.
Data from the Game Inspection and Coordination Bureau showed that the GGR across Macau markets fell 23% in October from a year earlier. Analysts said the results were mainly attributable to a sharp drop in VIP chip rolls.
Over the past few months, public market gambling has been on the rise year-on-year, even as VIP gambling is retreating in the face of China’s crackdown on corruption.
The Office for National Statistics said the number of visitors in October supported the closure of many Chinese factories and workers taking long breaks, helped by the national holiday and the ensuing “golden holiday.” It also said the festival on Oct. 2 in Chongyoung was a contributor to the increase in visitor numbers.
The bureau added that of the 1.82 million mainland visitors during the period, 43% were from nearby Guangdong province.
The number of mainland visitors traveling under the individual visit scheme increased by 18 percent to 798,110.
